I've been doing eBay since 1999. I'm not the best seller or making crazy money on eBay; it's side money. I keep most of my eBay sale items and shipping supplies in storage, and most months, I don't earn the money to pay the rental fee.Meaning I pay for the unit from my workpay. But eBay is the best place to sell used things. It's a big garage sale.
Where do I get items to list on eBay? Four sources(two extra points not mentioned in the video below).
- I sell my own stuff I'm getting rid of(electronics, appliances, toys, clothing, etc.).
- I work in a hotel, and guests often leave things behind. If I find these items I turn them in to security, and if the guests don't claim them within a period of time, I get to keep them.
- Hotel guests give me things as a form of gratuity. One example was a pair of Emirates Pajamas I sold for $70!
- My older brother works in a college and receives lost and found items as well. He sends them to me. I give him a few bucks for doing so.
By 'sourcing' items to resell this way, I'm keeping my acquisition cost low and making a better profit.
Although when I am selling my personal articles, I'm not making the money that I initially spent, but I either had fun with the item or just haven't used it in months. Why not make money from it?
With work and life, I only sometimes make time to list on eBay, but hopefully, with the new year 2025, I'll produce more eBay content again, meaning listing more. My goal would be to list 1 item daily.
My listing method is to list it and forget it. 'Buy it now!' Also, I ask customers to pay for shipping. I offer no free shipping.
The five items I sold for November 2024.
- Book. Ogilvy on Advertising for $5. There was a period when I was interested in marketing. My research said this book was a classic in the field. I read the book and learned some lessons. This was sitting in my storage unit for years. It finally sold! I lost money on this one, for sure. Thinking about it now, I no longer sell the books I read. The notes I make in them can be used for future content creation. So, I should've kept this book.
- Mickey & Minnie Mouse Graphic Sweater for $20. This was one of the items my brother sent me. It was new with tags. Depending on how I feel, I might have held off for a better price, but I want to get things moving and bring some cash in.
- Macbook Air 2020 for $423. I recently updated my Macbook. This was one of the two I put up for sale. It's nice that the laptop has a decent value almost 5 years later. This was only listed for a short time and sold quickly.
- Young LA Tanktop for $25. Another item was sent from my brother. This was also new with tags. I don't know how this is pronounced, but I own a few of their soccer pants for years and wear them almost weekly—some of my favorite casual /everyday pants.
- Folding Chair for $25. I purchased a folding chair from Amazon and noticed two came in the package. The big lesson with this sale was keeping the original box. This made it easier for me to pack when it sold, as I wouldn't have to search for a box that would fit the chair. Also, this is a larger item than I usually sell. Thankfully, a pharmacy that accepts FedEx packages is close to my storage place. It wasn't heavy, so I just carried it over.
