2022 Favorites-February-May

Earlier this year(2022), I made a video/podcast in January about my favorite month's content. Here's my follow-up: my favorites from February to May.

This list consists of movies, TV shows, video games, and comics. To be included, I had to finish this content from beginning to end.

Unfortunately, nothing stood out during this time when it came to comics, and I dabbled in many games but did not complete any.

February

February was all about the TV shows. Starting with Korean zombie horror, 'All of Us Are Dead,' on Netflix. Recently my mom told me she's all about the overseas content on Netflix, especially the Korean stuff. With this series, I can see why and it didn't disappoint. Teens trapped in a high school during a zombie outbreak and CW-level drama between the characters amidst the carnage, I'm in!

The next show was Prime Video's 'Reacher.' I never got into the Tom Cruise Reacher movies. But this series was fun. A wandering, mysterious, highly trained ex-military soldier comes into town and turns it upside down. It's a total throwback to a Schwarzenegger or Stallone movie from the 80s; that's right up my alley.

I feel 'Peacemaker' on HBO Max will be on many fans' TV shows of the year for 2022. If James Gunn is directing and writing, I want to see it. Who can forget that goofy dance number with the cast at the beginning of each episode? Good times.

This month I also discovered Yellowstone. I binged Season 1. This show is the cowboy mafia drama I never knew I'd be fascinated by.

Finally, rounding out February was season 2 of Euphoria on HBO Max. Dramas about addiction intrigue me. Besides the story, the visuals are sensational. They remind me of highly stylistic music videos I'd watch in the 90s and 2000s from directors like Mark Romanek and Spike Jonze.

March

In March, my fascination with Yellowstone continued as I consumed seasons 2 & 3. Season 2 was good; season 3 had a violent cliffhanger!

The Last Kingdom as well wrapped up its final season this month. What an incredible show from start to finish as we follow this set of characters and watch them grow into leaders and warriors. I loved History Channel's Vikings show, but the Last Kingdom is better in some aspects. Also great to see actors from this show appear elsewhere. The actor who played Father Beocca appeared as a villain in Apple TV's 'Mosquito Coast.' The actor who plays Osbert is a central character in HBOs' House of The Dragon.

This month also has a couple of movies. First, 'Nobody,' starring Bob Odenkirk, produced by the same creative team who made the John Wick movies. A fun action movie starring an average everyday person kicking major ass. The other film was Turning Red on Disney+. Critics I follow praised the movie, and I found it to be delightful. I loved the bucking of tradition and the relationships between the main character, her friends, and her family.

Finishing up March was 'Is It Cake?' on Netflix. For years I've enjoyed competitive reality TV, where contestants show their skills. My past favorites are Top Chef, Top Shot, Hell's Kitchen, So You Think You Can Dance, and American Idol. In 'Is It Cake, ' participants compete in making cakes that look like everyday items. Then the host, with a knife, reveals if the cake is edible. Fun show.

April

These next two months, my favorites were sparse as Spring began, and I tended to go out more and watch less. However, April was all about the season finale of Ozark. My favorite recurring theme on the show is how the Byrde family escape impossible situations. We see something similar in Breaking Bad with Walter White. Ordinary people using their appearance as cover to do criminal activities behind the scenes. Sounds like a true crime documentary.

May

My two recommendations for May happened Memorial Day weekend and are soaked in 80s nostalgia with modern-day flair. The first movie in theaters appears on this list: Top Gun Maverick. One of the most money-making films of this year and a great time that had me rooting for Tom Cruise and his team of pilots. This month also brought Stranger Things season 4 Part 1. This batch of episodes felt like an 8+ hour movie building up to the second half, which would come weeks later in July. The introduction of the Vecna character was slow going but built him up as the big bad for the incoming Part 2.

Agree? Disagree? Do you have any recommendations from the first half of the year? Please comment below. Thanks for reading!

Bob Marley One Love Spoiler Review-$93 Million Later

I enjoyed Bob Marley's One Love, a 2024 biopic based on the legendary musician's life. The highlights for me were Kingsley Ben-Adir's and Lashana Lynch's performances as Bob and Rita Marley. Ben-Adir oozed charisma in playing Bob, and Ms. Lynch made me feel their deep relationship bond. The film is a musical in a way, as several of Bob's classic songs were performed.   One Love also weaves the stories and motivations for classic songs, such as 'Three Little Birds,' with Mr. Marley putting it together in the backyard of his home in Kingston.  Video version of my review.    I hummed 'Exodus' days after watching the movie.   This beautifully shot movie details several critical moments in the singer's life, such as an assassination attempt, his extended stay in the UK, and his first concert back in Jamaica, where he had warring political figures make peace on stage. The movie's budget was $70 million, and I assume it cost another $70 million to
