What's Your One Thing?

Thank you Robin Sharma.   Speaking to a friend recently got me jazzed about doing Amazon FBA again.   I even re-considered Kindle publishing.   I logged into both of my accounts to check on their status.

In Robin Sharma’s recent podcast titled ‘How to create a World Class Company’, his first trait was closely related to the ONE thing.    Here are my biggest takeaways after reading that book.   Listening to this podcast has taken me back to why this idea initially grabbed my attention.   It reminded me, why I stopped pursuing those avenues in the first place.

My one thing consists of four areas.   Expressing myself, creating, documenting my life and continuing to grow by consuming personal development material.

What I will do:

My time(when not relaxing or working) should be spent on my one thing.    I will limit the stuff I buy for my eBay store.   Freeing up even more time and funds to focus in this space.

My current avenues to express myself/create/document are podcasting, vlogging, blogging.     I want to add book writing to that list.    James Altucher put out this Ultimate Cheat Sheet to Write Books.    He’s written 18!   I want to write 18+ myself.    Writing my own books, I can do Kindle publishing my way.    My podcasts consists of regular segments such as weird stories, biggest takeaways from books I’ve read, self improvement material and more.   Where as I can quote books, replay songs from the radio, on the podcast; doing so doesn’t get me in any trouble(to date).    But when writing books, it must be more of my thoughts mixed with the material being layed out. No plagiarism here.

It will start with blogging.    Putting together books from my older content is another reason why blogging will become more of a priority than the podcast.

The blog material will be turned into audio, then into video(as it has been on my most recent episode).   The vlogs are just myself documenting, expressing my life.

The things I enjoy regularly are closely related to my one thing.   Taking classes, dancing, working on the podcast, drawing, exercise, yoga, watching movies and tv shows and reviewing them.

This is my zone, this is where I live.   It has taken me the last two decades to find this.

What’s your one thing?   What’s the thing you’ve done for years that you still enjoy to this day?   Please comment below.

#99

In this episode I discuss selling the stuff you own which you no longer use.    I also discuss using escort services to combat my porn and masturbation addiction.

Escort Services?

Most nights, right before getting to bed, I get the urge to watch porn.   To masturbate and watch porn.

In reading ‘Way of the Superior Man’ by David Deida, porn and masturbation lower my power as a man.   The book indirectly says it lowers my confidence.   Rubbing furiously down there desensitizes the sensation of being inside a woman.   In the past, when I was with a partner, there were occasions were I had trouble becoming erect.   I blame it on the years of porn and masturbation.

Porn changes my mental connections from what is naturally, pleasurably, sexy.   Versus a video of people ‘performing’ sex.   Here’s a video interview of Gary Wilson by Stefan molyneux discussing this.

Real Sex is not edited or three go-to  positions.   I feel it’s awkward, vulnerable, fun, exciting, sexier and much more intense in person.

The thing is, when it comes to porn, I’ve been watching it for so long (20+ years), and I like it.   The variety is the best.

However, I know it’s not good for me.

This is where the struggle comes in.

Identifying the time when the porn watching and masturbation happen and openly talking about it, I’m hoping will help me to ultimately stop both.

When I’ve been in relationships, I wouldn’t entertain porn as much.    I’m currently working on meeting someone.    I’m using dating websites such as OK Cupid and Coffee Meets Bagel.

I don’t consider myself shy, but I have trouble talking to women, that I find attractive.

In the meantime, I’ve begun entertaining escort services(i.e. paying ‘ladies of the night’ found on Backpage.com), with the hopes of holding me over (sex-wise).

I see using escort services as a form of self care.    Similar to getting a massage, using a sensory deprivation tank, going to the gym, or taking a yoga class.    It’s more expensive than each of those activities.   I couldn’t afford it every week.    A hidden fear of mine is acquiring another STD.    Having to explain genital herpes is bad enough.

This is my latest experiment, let’s see how this goes long term.

Are you trying to quit porn?    Let go of masturbation?    Share your story below.    I’m sure it will help someone else.

Sell What You don't Use

Bicycling for me is a quick way to get from point A to point B, run errands and another form of exercise.

I ride my bicycle to go food shopping.    Ride to my nearest Target or Home Depot when needed.

I would take really long trips, from Jersey to NYC.   Yonkers, Washington Heights, the South Bronx.    Mostly visiting family.

In 2017, I’ve found myself using my bicycle a lot less.   Why? Walking and listening to podcasts had taken over.

Podcasts provide me with education, entertainment, material for content of my own.   The process of being in motion while listening helps me grasp what I’m hearing through the headphones.   Walking and listening are ideal during great weather days, but I found myself doing the same during the winter months.

One might ask, can’t you listen to podcasts while bicycling?   Over the years, I’ve been hit by cars while riding.   I wasn’t following common sense rules of the road.   Riding distracted is dangerous.

Lately I’ve been paying attention to my patterns.   My daily behaviors.    What things I regularly use?    If I don’t use that thing, I’d sell it on Ebay and make some extra cash.   My Ebay store is www.paulsellsthings.com   I wasn’t using my bike so I put it up for sale.

Much more space became available in my tiny studio apartment, and I was the happier for it.

However, nostalgia for times past makes me want to do otherwise.    I recently was motivated to look back at some of my earlier vlogs.   See those here.    I felt they often had great messages, but were poorly put together.

I sold a lot of the vlogging equipment I had at the time.     It was seldom used.   Looking back at those old vlogs taught me many lessons and made me think how I would do things differently if I would take up video blogging again.    Also what cameras, devices I would need to do so effectively.

I also did loads of bicycling in the videos, which made me miss my bicycle.

Lessons learned here:

-Pay attention to your patterns and what you regularly use, clothes, utensils, shoes are examples.    Sell or get rid of the rest of your stuff you don’t use.   You won’t take any of that stuff with you when you pass on.    Why put the burden of getting rid of your stuff on someone else?    If you don’t want to deal with it, why do you think someone else will?   Things that I’ve kept(that I almost never use); fire extinguisher, flashlight, hammer,  just to give a few examples.   I’ve kept these in case of emergencies or if something needs fixing in the apartment.

-Make mistakes, experiment-fail-experience!    Those early  vlogs taught me how to put together a more cohesive video.    I was inspired and made a new vlog recently.   I feel it came out great compared to my old stuff.   See it here.

-If you sell a thing you use to own, you can most likely get it back.    Especially with eBay.    Old action figure from your childhood?   Find it on eBay!    A specific bicycle model you loved?   Find it on eBay!    I’m not saying you will find that exact thing but a copy or similar item may do the trick.

I took my bicycle off sale.    Greased, oiled it.     Rode it around the neighborhood, it was great.     I missed it.

History of the Eagles documentary - REVIEW

#96

This is my review of the Netflix documentary 'History of the Eagles'.

I fired up Netflix, picked something, let it play in the background.    For me a documentary fits that purpose perfectly.   Something I don’t have to sit down and watch but I can listen to while I’m doing other stuff.   About two hours later I’m lying in bed full on watching The History of the Eagles.

Not intentionally, I’ve heard of the Eagles and have listened to their songs whenever I’d be somewhere that had a classic rock station.   I was born in the 70s and raised in the 80s.   Glenn Frey I remember more as an actor than musician.
I remember him in Miami Vice, I remember his songs ‘The Heat is On’, and ‘You Belong to the City’.

Anytime I would see Don Henley on MTV I would switch off out of immediate disinterest.

During the 90s VH1 had the Behind the Music series which I always enjoyed.   This documentary was sort of that, except it was a 3 hour epic.   This was released in 2013.   Three years before Mr. Frey passed away in my hometown(?) of Washington Heights, NYC.

This documentary made me really appreciate the sound of The Eagles, the stories of their struggles, their success, their fame.   In watching the documentary it made me realize several times ‘these guys sang these songs?’   All the band members being so talented.   It made me appreciate Mr. Henley’s incredible voice as well.    Himself, Joe Walsh are the standout voices in the band for me.

The documentary follows the same rise, fall, redemption model many of these same stories follow.   Watching the performances from the 70s, then from the early 2000s gave me chills.   These guys seemed like everyday guys who made their dreams happen.   It made me think, man I want to sing for some strange reason.

I’m not a fan of this kind of music but a great story is a great story and I do recommend this documentary.

The Fun and Uncomfortable

#95

I was recently between jobs. I had a little more free time than usual, which I’m always happy to have as long as there is money in the bank. Listening to some of my favorite self improvement/motivational podcasts two things were suggested that I took to heart.

1. Scheduling fun everyday.
2. Get out of your comfort zone by participating in activities you haven’t before.

Daily fun. By scheduling a fun activity (activities that I might consider fun, a gym class, yoga class, volunteering, just to give a few examples), on a regular basis, the daily monotony of our routines can be broken. It empowers the feeling of making life worth living. I heard James Altucher talk about this in on one of his podcasts and I thought it was brilliant.

Doing new things to get out of your comfort zone. I listened to a couple of interviews from Jesse Itzler regarding his book, ‘Living with a Seal’. My main takeaway from these interviews; do the hard thing, this is where we grow.

We hardly remember the compliments or good times. The hard times, the down times, the painful times, this is what plays over in our minds again and again.

A micro example for myself; I brush my teeth after eating dinner, but save flossing for later. With this new mindset, I will tell myself this is where I’m having resistance right now, which is even more of a reason to floss right now.

It doesn’t mean that one has to be in a place of suffering all the time, but having the satisfaction of going through the fire and knowing that your leveling up because of it, can enrich one’s life.
Meetup.com is a great resource for this. Group activities with others supporting you along way, in doing the new and uncomfortable. Two meet ups I’ve recently attended were Naked Yoga, and Rejection Therapy.

Standing naked, doing yoga poses with a room full of naked people sounds intimidating at first. It wasn’t so bad after a while.

Rejection therapy was a lot of fun. A group of us approached strangers and asked for selfies, hugs.
Odd requests such as cutting in line or asking a pretty girl out to dinner, with the goal to be ..rejected.

I left these get-togethers grinning from ear to ear. Feeling great having conquered fears. I will be going back!
